Roger's Story

A brief bio of James ¿Roger¿ Braddy: I was born at St. Mary¿s Hospital in Galveston although we lived in Texas City. Not sure where we lived when I was born. My first recollection of a home was in a small, white house on the corner of 5th Street and 8th Avenue. This was on the opposite corner next to the old library. In early 1945, my dad, Maurice James Braddy (accountant) took a position with NABISCO in Houston. My mother, Jenne Alice McNary Braddy (born and reared in LaMarque) passed away in Sept 1945 and I lived in my Aunt Catherine McNary¿s and Uncle Louis Margot¿s home in LaMarque for a short period. My dad remarried and we moved back to Texas City, living in Third Avenue Village, Snug Harbor and West End until my father bought a home in LaMarque in 1954. I was attending Danforth Elementary in 1947 and following the explosion attended Heights Elementary, then to Roosevelt-Wilson in about 1948-49 and then back to Danforth Elementary. Also attended (if my memory serves me correctly) Danforth Jr. High on 6th Street just prior to moving to LaMarque. Just a side note: my cousins were and still are: Lillian Braddy Fontenot and spouse Emery, presently of Texas City and Elaine Braddy Gangluff and spouse Ed, presently of Phoenix, AZ. Over those first 14 years of my life, I met and was friends with many, many ...Expand for more
really good people in Texas City. Some (not all in Class of 58) that come to mind are the entire Stafford Family, who were my immediate neighbors; Tommy and Jimmy Giles in whose home I viewed my first TV (Felix the Cat cartoon); Don and Newton Ellis, Bonnie King, Barbara Lum, Harriet Hopkins, Lanny Landtroop, Sandra Bledsoe, Yuca Lee Sheafer, Bill May, Twila Ann Pennycuff Guillory, Ruth Hodges, D. B. and Jerry Whittington, Marvin Skaggs, Jane Putnam, David Westmoreland, Jay Arrington, just to name a few. After graduation from LaMarque High School, I enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served 8 years enlisted; 4 years as a warrant officer and 8 ½ years as a regular commissioned officer. During my 21 years in the Navy, I attended colleges in California, Guam, Japan, Virginia, Hawaii and UH-Clear Lake. I worked in photo reconnaissance, electronic warfare intelligence, amphibious warfare and finished my career in Hawaii as an NCIS Agent at Pearl Harbor Naval Base. Following retirement from the Navy, I was employed by Celanese Chemical Company in Pasadena for 21 years working in Human Resources and retired in December 2001. I am living in Clear Lake with my wife Beverly and my soon to be graduating senior, Samantha, who is working on her BSN at UTMB in Galveston. I have four other children scattered hither and yon.
